MY UNPOPULAR OPINIONS VOL. I

Almost everything is a matter of opinion, and everyone is entitled to that no matter who, what, etc etc. It is what truly separate us at the end of the day. Here are some of my opinions that don't usually fall into the general with the majority...

WHAT OTHERS LIKE, AND I DON'T

Gotham

Initially, I was against even watching it. The story wasn't about Batman, and the lead actor was from "The OC" (sometimes we have to share the television, so we can watch all the nerd stuff we want haha) and wasn't impressed with the limited acting. I eventually submitted and tried it out, only to lost interest quickly. And if that is supposed to be The Joker, or his younger pre-clown self, I hate it haha I am thinking I felt what the Heath and Leto haters felt after seeing them and still not liking their portrayals. I however liked both, but regardless, I am not a fan of the series.

Dr. Who

I'm sorry. Just not my forte I guess....put down the gun....please?

The Walking Dead on AMC

Took me a minute to get into it and start watching. But, it didn't last long. I tried the comic books, and made watching the show even harder. Comic books didn't last long for me either, but admit part of that problem was not reading from the start. The show did have moments, but then it just felt like an endless "wait for them to die" situation. Recent events and what everyone has said has made me glad that I got out before things felt even more "over done". It is just a personal preference, but as a grown man I don't need to see death and sex in shows and movies. I am more impressed when they are able to strongly get what is happening across without actually showing anything. And even at its peak, I don't feel an extra show was needed or deserved.

WHAT OTHERS HATED, AND I LIKED

Daredevil (2003)

Again with limited exposure, but again liked it. Was it open to end amazing? No, but we were in early 2000's and were just in the beginning of getting comic book films. I will say that Affleck's hair as Matt Murdoch was ridiculous, but loved the look of the suit. It was an immediate ending to that old "wanting spandex" phase. In regards to DD that is, Bullseye needed something better than what Collin gave us. Although I am sure going sans mask was so they didn't cover his pretty face haha

Green Lantern (2011)

I should start with mentioning that I had limited exposure to Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern side of things in DC Comics. I am sure that it had helped not having the set in expectations like I do for Batman, The Joker, etc. I liked it. I thought Ryan Reynolds did an okay job with his portrayal of Hal. The costume was a bit much, but figured it would look great in a darker DC Movieverse (was still in Blue Lantern mode with that idea). I was actually disappointed that there wasn't a follow-up where we would likely see Sinestro begin his reign of fear. Speaking of which, I thought that Mark Strong nailed that one out of the park. Someone that should possibly be recast as the same character. Possibly as like many I get tired of explaining how these franchises and movieverses are all separate from each other. Who's in DC, who's in Marvel. That Batman franchise isn't connected to this one. Etc. Etc.

Star Wars Episodes I, II, & III

Most notably, Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith. I liked seeing more Jedi and Sith as opposed to just one or two (Master and Apprentice). I was a fan of the upgraded lightsaber battles, especially between Obi Wan and Anakin in  Revenge Of The Sith. I also liked how the film seemed "brighter" adding to the effect of the darkness in Episodes IV-VI,

Just my opinion. Which is both valuable and irrelevant as again we are all entitled to our own opinions, even when they don't "fit" with the majority. There will be more in all areas that I try to cover (wrestling, games, etc.). Until then...Stay Nerdy!

JUSTICE LEAGUE ON TV POSSIBLE NOW?

It was reported that the version of the Suicide Squad on televisions "Arrow" was scrapped due to the upcoming live action version. So, it was likely that a t.v. version of DC Comics ultimate team of superheroes, Justice League, was not going to happen. However, now we see "Supergirl" moving to the CW and joining "Arrow", "The Flash", and "Legends Of Tomorrow" ("iZombie" too but separate universe). Not only that, she is bringing one of DC Comics trinity in Superman.

Does this mean that there is a possibility of seeing a new version of group? We saw the Justice League in "Smallville" missing Wonder Woman and Batman, but the team was assembled regardless. Why not go the same route again, but with a newer spin on it this time? It is most likely that we won't see Batman or Wonder Woman, maybe as Bruce Wayne or Diana Prince, but not as their hero versions. That is okay, there are still others both already within the television universe and who could possibly make an appearance after likely being off movie studios radar at this point in time. It's okay if Superman isn't even involved.
Green Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl cover the basics of human, meta human, and alien. We'll assume Aquaman and Cyborg may be off limits right now, so we'll go with Mister Miracle, Doctor Fate, and maybe bring up Vibe to replace Green Lantern with the friendship banter with The Flash.

If not the Justice League, then definitely a new version of the classic Justice Society. Haven't been a fan of "Legends Of Tomorrow" so it could make for a good replacement given some of their cast would make perfect fits. The Atom, Hawkman, and Hawkgirl to be precise. Now that I think of it, it would make for an excellent two-part television movie at the end of every season. Since Justice League is on the big screen, then a Justice Society could own the small.

I honestly don't see why they don't allow characters to appear, as the real fans are able to differentiate between the universes so there wouldn't be any confusion. We spend a lot of time explaining to "outsiders" which movies are connected and not.

COMIC-CON HARD TO BEAT THIS YEAR

No, unfortunately not one of the thousands lucky enough to attend this years Comic-Con in San Diego. Simply one of the millions catching the news and footage released upon the internet. One day it would be nice to be able to attend, but would it be as awesome as this year has appeared to be? The panels, signings, etc this year include some legendary greatness. Star Wars Ep. VII: The Force Awakens brought Luke, Han, and Leia aka Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Price to the world. Sure, they may have been in and out of Cons for years, but when was the last time they were all together, promoting a "new" movie? Even more so, when will we see this again? Hopefully for years to come, but life is always that proverbial biatch.
As a comic book nerd, this year looks amazing given the things involving Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice. The panels, the signings, and of course the release of the trailer. Which looks even better than the teaser that proceeded it. Personally it is the best thing to come out of this weekend. Take a look below and see why...

There is also other comic book movies making appearances this weekend. Deadpool and Suicide Squad are set to hit theaters in 2016 along side Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice. Then there is the television side of things with Arrow, The Flash, and Legends Of Tomorrow. That is just the tip of the iceberg really, tons of other panels, signings, appearances, and whatnot from a variety of genres in plenty of forms of entertainment.Video games, Wrestling, toys, apparel. Nerdvana would be more apt. One day. One day.

DVR/PVR GETTING A WORKOUT

Sure, everyone's DVR/PVR has been used for anything and everything they like. But, for the "comic book" centric, it is about to get bigger. Of course, it depends on peoples preferences as always. However, starting next season there is an abundance to pick from and thus far, everything has been top notch or close to it.

Returning will be "Arrow", "The Flash", "Gotham", "iZombie", "Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.", "Marvel's Agent Carter", and "The Walking Dead". There is even rumors of other networks bringing "Constantine" back for a second season, after being cancelled by NBC. Even without it, there are seven comic book shows thus far, and things get bigger with the new additions.
"Supergirl" will be debuting next season. Although it is on CBS, it does share a connection with The CW's "Arrow" and "The Flash" via producer Greg Berlanti. Who has even hinted at the worlds be connected and possibly have cross-overs.
With or without her, the "Arrow" and "The Flash" world grows through The CW's "Legends Of Tomorrow". Where we will see a line-up of characters both returning (The Atom & Firestorm), debuting (Hawkgirl), and a mix of the two (White Canary). Looking forward to it, but there is the thought of possibly doing "too much" and if one fails will there be a domino effect?
FOX will be adding to their line-up with "Lucifer" from DC Comic Imprint Vertigo's "Sandman".
"The Walking Dead" universe is expanding as well with "Fear The Walking Dead". It will be interesting to see if AMC can recreate the success with this one.
Netflix has also entered the fray, although not everyone has it, "Daredevil" was a success and returning for another season, and "The Punisher" set to debut on the show. Show wise, "Iron Fist", "Marvel's A.K.A. Jessica Jones", and "Marvel's The Defenders" confirmed to be joining their ranks.

There is also a long list of shows that are in the pilot and developmental phases. Meaning things are set to get even bigger in the future. So, no matter how you go about watching them it will be a marathon of sorts. Personally, looking at a minimum of seven shows alone. Family life, work alone makes this a task. Especially when adding WWE and another upcoming "Comic Book Movie Boom" (with DC Comics finally joining the race). And of course, lets not forget reading the comic books for which these shows and movies are based on. Whoever created DVR/PVR's.....THANK YOU!!!!

NGN's ALL-TIME FAVORITE COMIC BOOK CHARACTERS ON THE BIG AND SMALL SCREENS

Everyone has their own favorites, whether it is the characters, the actors who played them, or a combination the the two. Some characters have only been portrayed by one actor/actress, while the others have had different people take the helm. But, here is a list of favorite characters from both movie and television shows of the comic book genre...

Batman

Surprisingly, Ben Affleck may be the preferred choice in a years time after the teaser trailer for "Batman Versus Superman: Dawn Of Justice", but until then it is Michael Keaton. If there was a Michael Keaton and Christian Bale love child, they'd likely be tops in my books.

Wolverine

I can remember sitting on a computer in the library back when I was in high school, with very slow internet, and thinking, "Who the hell is Hugh Jackman?". This was after reading the intial report of who was chosen to play Wolverine. Of course, due to lack of films, I was always thinking pro-wrestler types should be cast as they had the look. I was young so don't pass judgement. Here we are over a decade later, and now think, "Thank god for Hugh Jackman".

Hellboy

He may be the only one to "go red", but Ron Perlman has been a perfect fit for the role of Hellboy, even though not a reader, his performance made me appreciate the character. It will be hard to see someone else play the role, but at 65 years old, Perlman won't be able to lift that right hand forever.

Superman

There are still those who may never think that Christopher Reeve can be replaced. I understand, however, Henry Cavill is my pick. He's portrayed the character very well in "Man Of Steel", with both acting ability and dedication to his physical appearance. And I am looking forward to seeing him reprise the role again, and again.

The Punisher

Dolph Lundgren gave the dark, grittier version, Thomas Jane had the budget, but Ray Stevenson is my choice thus far of those to play The Punisher. He may have had the lower budget and weaker script, Stevenson had the look and capabilities to make things work better than the rest. But, there will likely be a new Punisher, so this choice could always change. Or not.

The Joker

It is really hard to pick just one. Cesar introduced me to The Joker, Jack captivated me as a child, and Heath did the same but with me as an adult. Will go with Heath, as he did give me a rendition similar to The Joker seen in the graphic novel "Joker". Can't wait to see how Jared Leto portrays the character in "Suicide Squad".

Deadpool

Not so much the version Ryan Reynolds gave us in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine", although Reynolds did perform well pre-Weapon XI, it was what was shown in the small test footage that leaked online awhile back. And even though it is in production mode at the moment, I am thinking this will be on the list in the future anyhow.

Green Arrow

Sure, he hasn't quite "achieved" that title, but Stephen Amell has not only made me like the character, but has earned respect for what he has done with the character. If not for the success of "Arrow" their wouldn't be a "tv-verse" growing on the small screen. As well as possibly helping other networks "green light" the comic book shows they have produced since "Arrow" debuted.


There are others that could easily make the list. Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, the list could go on really. But, these were the characters I enjoyed the most thus far. Always hopeful that future films and performances will alter this list of course. Looking at you, Affleck and Leto.

MOVIE AND TV SHOW FAMILIES

Similar to the Valentine's Day article with Movie and TV Show couples, the family side of things will also have more of a nerdy focus to it. Families can consist of a lot, from blood relation, to love, and respect. A combination of all of those, or individually, each make for the foundation of a family. So, in the spirit of Canada's holiday today, Family Day, here is a short list of Movie and TV Show families...

The Queen Family

It is somewhat of a tragic family with the deaths, deceptions, amongst other things. But, as is usually the case in any heroes life, and their families.

The Bennet Family

(Heroes)

At times dysfunctional, but in the end nothing but an unbreakable bond, and a father's love. Yes there is Noah and Claire, but lets not forget the "normies" of the family who protect this family is Lyle and Sandra (despite divorcing Noah).

The Potter And Weasley Family

(Harry Potter franchise)

Not your typical nerds per say, and possibly generalizing here, but Harry, Ron, Hermione, etc are a collection of outcasts, geniuses,  etc. Typical nerd and geek traits, no?

The Amell Family

(Arrow and The Flash)

Sure we mentioned The Queen's which has Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen. But, there is also his cousin, Robbie. Who just so happens to play Ronnie Raymond aka Firestorm.

Alex and Lilly

(Grandma's Boy)

Besides being a video game tester, Alex is also a creator as well. His grandma, Lily, is quite the natural born video gamer.

MOVIES AND TV COUPLES

There is really an endless list simply of these couples based on the fact that "love" is really the basis of any story (if you think about it). So, we'll try and focus this list on the more "nerdy" couples from across both the big and small screens. Here's our favorites...

Indiana Jones and Marion Ravenwood

(Indiana Jones And...)

Marion is a keeper for sure. She goes toe-to-toe in verbal and physical encounters, but more impressive, is her ability to drink every man under the table. She does lose some points for raising Mutt, but can't really blame her for Shia La Beouf being horrible.

Neo and Trinity

(The Matrix trilogy)

Sure, the love scenes seemed awkward, and unnecessary, but their story is quite beautiful. Neo was "the one" in more ways than one.

Clark Kent/Superman and Lois Lane

(Lois And Clark: The New Adventures Of Superman)

Easily lands atop any Comic Book Couples list (which you can find HERE actually), but this television rendition was great, despite the occasional cheese.

Sheldon Cooper and Amie Farrah Fowler

(The Big Bang Theory)

To be honest, Raj and his little pooch, Cinnamon almost made the list instead. But, that at times is a little too weird, and the dog might want to lawyer up. Joking aside, Sheldon and Amy are the poster couple for generations of awkward couples.

Han Solo and Princess Leia

(Star Wars...)

Said it would be "nerdy", and this was almost not an option if going that route.

Spock and Lt. Uhura

(Star Trek...)

Now, there is no need to war. Well, one of them.

TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT! THE FLASH SPEEDS ONTO TELEVISION

Although I am not an avid read of the Scarlet Speedster, I am a fan and have been looking forward to this since before even "Arrow" came to be. In a sense. I was a huge fan of the short lived series as a kid, and still am a bit confused as to why "The Flash" didn't survive in the 90's. Regardless, here we are about to debut a new series tonight, and things looked good before they even started. The episodes last season in "Arrow" were pretty good, and that was without there being The Flash yet appearing, just Grant Gustin playing Barry Allen. Add in all the photo stills and trailers that have been appearing since production began, things are looking better than good, they looking to be possibly epic. Of course, we will have to see if the story and acting are up to par, but then again I am sure there were the same reservations when "Arrow" began.

Like I said, not an avid reader of The Flash, but I am hoping to see certain characters appear from his rogues gallery. Captain Cold for starters, and I may catch heat for this, but I hoping he is more like the New 52 comic book version. At least style wise, as I like the updated look of Leonard Snart. It's*ahem* cool. I also hope to see Captain Boomerang, Mirror Master, and Professor Zoom (that episode should be really good visually). However, I am curious if we will ever see Gorilla Grodd make an appearance. If this was a movie, then there would be no doubt about it. Look at how well things look in the current Planet Of The Apes series on the big screen. It could be possible for the television series, it isn't as though they are forbidden from using CGI, it is just the budget doesn't usually have the room for it. And with all the zooming around, perhaps there isn't the room, but then again, perhaps there is.

Getting ahead of myself talking about CGI usage and such, when at this moment, it is all on the direction and quality of both the writing and the acting abilities of the cast. I would like to think that they will be able to do as well as "Arrow" has done, but it isn't a guarantee. It is hard not to talk about how awesome the cross-overs could be, but I guess we will find out if The Flash can live up to the hype tonight. Here's hoping it is not only better than the original series in the 1990's, but that it also survives those dreaded ratings.

MARVEL WINNING ON BIG SCREEN? MAYBE. WHO CARES THOUGH?

There tends to be three-sides. DC Comics fans, Marvel Comics fans, and then those who like both equally. And that is for comic books, movies, television shows, and video games. Marvel fans have been boasting and claiming victory due to the success of the Avengers and how many of the comic book genre films are from Marvel. They aren't wrong, but we are here to talk about how it doesn't really matter. Television shows are better than movies. It takes a moment to stop and really think about this. And then not all will see it this way.

Sure, there are a few things about films on the big screen that we rarely, if ever, see on the small screen. Bigger budgets, bigger explosions, and usually a stronger story. And of course there are downsides to television shows. Ratings can be a real pain because if they are low, a show is in trouble and could get cancelled. Key word is "could". With television, there is room to grow and/or improve. There is a chance to make corrections on the fly and finish the season strong. Most could look to Marvel's own in, "Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.". The series started slightly weak, with even Marvel fans were asking "wtf". But, they turned things around and closed out the season with a really good run. With movies, the final cut is the final cut. If the film bombs, and has horrible reviews, it is less likely that there will be a follow-up film. Even a quick reboot isn't guaranteed to happen. Look at some of Marvel's early attempts on the big screen. Films like "Daredevil" and "Ghost Rider" didn't fare well at all. "Daredevil" is now about to rebooted, and "Ghost Rider" managed a sequel somehow, but failed again. DC Comics may have put out less films post-2000 (things were different before that with Marvel being barely existed and were poorly done in regards to movies), but they have less failures.
Another way that television is better than movies, is the wait time. Longest wait time in television is the "summer break". a few months of reruns before returning for weekly shows. Movies? Looking at a minimum 2 year wait time in between films. Sure there are exceptions, but not many. And although things are getting better, even today sequels and follow-ups tend to pale in comparison to its predecessor. That is a long time to wait for disappointment. Same thing could be said about TV shows, but again, able to improve on things most times.
Going with the wait time, is also the star power. Of course you will see bigger names in a movie. They get paid more in most cases. However, with films there is only a small amount of time to get both the story across and get characters into it. With comic book movies especially, there are countless characters everyone wants to see make an appearance, and even if there is say five characters that fit, it is another x-amount of time between films and even less space for new characters to appear in the next one. With television, you have an entire season with numerous shows to not only tell one larger story or a collection of smaller stories, but also more room for characters to appear. Example would be villains, with 1 or 2 in one film, then 1-2 more in the next, etc To show 5-10 villains would take 5 films and roughly ten years time. Not the case on TV, as even if they focused on a villain or two for an entire season, they can showcase the same amount of them in half the time than with movies. And not even guaranteed to get the star to reappear (ie. Bruce Banner is two different people in the "Avengers" movieverse...damn you yet thank you, Edward Norton).
Now I am sure someone is thinking about the "Phases" for building up "Avengers". But remember to stop and think about what that style is slightly imitating. Television. In a basic sense of course with each film being an episode leading up to a massive season finale. That being said, now we have "Arrow" and "The Flash" about to take things to another level on the small screen. Cross-overs between the two could make for some pure awesomeness.
Lastly, television is generally more affordable than the movies. Almost everyone has a television (almost), but not everyone goes to the movies. Especially in the age we live in where it is all digital and despite laws, easily accessible...for free.
Was hard writing this really, as I love both film and television. Perhaps it is just the DC Comics fan within that had to make a point about who is really "winning" this supposed battle between DC Comics and Marvel (I do like Marvel, just a preference for the originals right now). And even though I enjoyed "Green Lantern" it was really DC's only flop, and others being more top quality, are they really "losing"? Definitely owning the small screen with "Arrow" and new shows "The Flash", "Gotham", and "Constantine". If we add quality video games to the mix, DC Comics is beating Marvel two out of three formats. So, you can have your movies, Marvel....and keep up the good work as they are great to watch.
