!MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOZ

As we saw in the pilot episode of The CW's "The Flash", Professor Zoom aka Reverse Flash is in this universe, and responsible for the murder of Barry Allen's mother. And as is always the case with the internet and social media, there's pictures! Photos of the filming show Reverse Flash in full costume, and getting the upper hand on the Scarlet Speedster. Rick Cosnett (from other CW franchises), is the man in the garb. How well he performs remains to be seen, but on a visual level, looks better than The Flash himself costume wise. Along side the casting of Professor Zoom/Reverse Flash, was the addition of Killer Frost. Who will be played by Danielle Panabaker (another CW regular). No stills of her yet, but if the pilot and the photos above leaves me not only worry free, but quite intrigued.

ARROW HITS ITS MARK ONCE AGAIN

CONTAINS SPOILERS! BEEN WARNED!

 

After being impressed by the series debuts of "Gotham" and "The Flash", I did have high expectations for the Season 3 premiere of "Arrow". Going in I knew that Roy Harper would be joining the team in a masked manner, inching closer to becoming either Speedy, Red Arrow or Arsenal (I am leaning on it being Speedy after something happens to Thea). I knew that Brandon Routh would be joining the cast, and eventually becoming The Atom. And at some point this season, we will possibly/likely see Ra's al Ghul make an appearance.

The high expectations were not only met, but actually surpassed. The  story was pretty solid, and exploring new areas. I am sure fans have been begging for some romance between Oliver and Felicity, and they finally got that. It was "explosive" and although seems to be short-lived, it makes for some possible hilarious awkward moments. Diggle is now a daddy, having a child with his...ex-wife who is now his girlfriend...and looks to be stepping away from the game. Although that isn't something that will last I am sure, it is more of a matter of what causes Diggs to return to action.
Brandon Routh made his debut, playing Ray Palmer who is looking to buy Queens Industries and came packed with the tech and confidence to do so. Be interesting to watch his character develop, as well as a possible relationship with Ms. Smoke, making for more awkward moments with Oliver. There is also Roy Harper and his story. His beginnings as a vigilante, as well as dealing with Thea leaving. Although I will have to admit, the whole suit looks fine, except his mask. Not quite sure what it is, but the mask doesn't suit him like it does with Arrow. And then finally, expectations were surpassed in a shocking way. With the show ending with the killing of Canary aka Sara Lance. Which looked pretty awesome if I must say, the overall action has stepped up this season. This leaves the door wise open with not only how Oliver, Laurel, and company deal with the sudden loss, but this is also an opportunity for Laurel to begin her journey to becoming Black Canary.

In a nutshell, the premiere was amazing on all levels, and has left me very intrigued on how the rest of the season will play out. I also loved Barry Allen making his appearance, tying "The Flash" and "Arrow" together on this side of things. Which is also another huge thing that I am looking forward to, and that is the possibly epic cross-overs that will occur between the two shows. Two shows that have started the 2014-2015 season of very strong.

TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT! THE FLASH SPEEDS ONTO TELEVISION

Although I am not an avid read of the Scarlet Speedster, I am a fan and have been looking forward to this since before even "Arrow" came to be. In a sense. I was a huge fan of the short lived series as a kid, and still am a bit confused as to why "The Flash" didn't survive in the 90's. Regardless, here we are about to debut a new series tonight, and things looked good before they even started. The episodes last season in "Arrow" were pretty good, and that was without there being The Flash yet appearing, just Grant Gustin playing Barry Allen. Add in all the photo stills and trailers that have been appearing since production began, things are looking better than good, they looking to be possibly epic. Of course, we will have to see if the story and acting are up to par, but then again I am sure there were the same reservations when "Arrow" began.

Like I said, not an avid reader of The Flash, but I am hoping to see certain characters appear from his rogues gallery. Captain Cold for starters, and I may catch heat for this, but I hoping he is more like the New 52 comic book version. At least style wise, as I like the updated look of Leonard Snart. It's*ahem* cool. I also hope to see Captain Boomerang, Mirror Master, and Professor Zoom (that episode should be really good visually). However, I am curious if we will ever see Gorilla Grodd make an appearance. If this was a movie, then there would be no doubt about it. Look at how well things look in the current Planet Of The Apes series on the big screen. It could be possible for the television series, it isn't as though they are forbidden from using CGI, it is just the budget doesn't usually have the room for it. And with all the zooming around, perhaps there isn't the room, but then again, perhaps there is.

Getting ahead of myself talking about CGI usage and such, when at this moment, it is all on the direction and quality of both the writing and the acting abilities of the cast. I would like to think that they will be able to do as well as "Arrow" has done, but it isn't a guarantee. It is hard not to talk about how awesome the cross-overs could be, but I guess we will find out if The Flash can live up to the hype tonight. Here's hoping it is not only better than the original series in the 1990's, but that it also survives those dreaded ratings.

GOTHAM: SURPASSING EXPECTATIONS

A television show set in Gotham City, and there isn't going to be Batman? That show is going to suck. That was my initial thought before "Gotham" made it's debut a few weeks ago. Nobody could blame me for thinking that way really. "Birds Of Prey" was similar in there being no appearance of Batman, other than in the opening credits/dialogue. It was a really weak show, and understandably got the axe quick. Who was the one character that everyone was yearning for in "Smallville"? More so than Wonder Woman, it was Batman. And sure "Gotham" has Bruce Wayne, but my original thought process was that he was too young, his story wouldn't be interesting until he is older and sets out on his journey to become Batman. I was also against the casting choice of Ben Mackenzie as James Gordon in the beginning, having only seen him on "The OC", where he was somewhat of a one-trick pony.

Here we are about to begin the third episode, and so far I was wrong about everything. Mackenzie is showing some range, not an abundance, but more than I saw before. And I am actually curious where he takes the character of Jim Gordon. The background story about Bruce Wayne and how he is coping with the death of his parents is actually interesting to watch so far. Although I do find Alfred to be too much of a hard-ass. I am also looking forward to Selina "Cat" Kyle's story unfolding, who like Bruce, I was thinking was too young to really have a relevant story. And if future characters are as intriguing as this rendition of Oswald Cobblepot becoming The Penguin, I am will continue to forget that Batman isn't here. Unlike some others out there, I don't want the "Gotham" universe to intertwine with the universe of "Arrow" and "The Flash". I want Batman to be in that universe, or at least heavily referenced in it. It would also kind of make no sense for Batman to be 20-30 years younger than Green Arrow and The Flash.

Of course all of this could change as early as tonight's episode, but it may not. And like I mentioned in an article HERE, television shows are better than movies in how they can change the direction of the show over the season. They did it with "Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D." closing the season on a strong not after a weaker start. Guess we will find out each week, same Non-Bat-Time, same Non-Bat-Channel.

MARVEL WINNING ON BIG SCREEN? MAYBE. WHO CARES THOUGH?

There tends to be three-sides. DC Comics fans, Marvel Comics fans, and then those who like both equally. And that is for comic books, movies, television shows, and video games. Marvel fans have been boasting and claiming victory due to the success of the Avengers and how many of the comic book genre films are from Marvel. They aren't wrong, but we are here to talk about how it doesn't really matter. Television shows are better than movies. It takes a moment to stop and really think about this. And then not all will see it this way.

Sure, there are a few things about films on the big screen that we rarely, if ever, see on the small screen. Bigger budgets, bigger explosions, and usually a stronger story. And of course there are downsides to television shows. Ratings can be a real pain because if they are low, a show is in trouble and could get cancelled. Key word is "could". With television, there is room to grow and/or improve. There is a chance to make corrections on the fly and finish the season strong. Most could look to Marvel's own in, "Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.". The series started slightly weak, with even Marvel fans were asking "wtf". But, they turned things around and closed out the season with a really good run. With movies, the final cut is the final cut. If the film bombs, and has horrible reviews, it is less likely that there will be a follow-up film. Even a quick reboot isn't guaranteed to happen. Look at some of Marvel's early attempts on the big screen. Films like "Daredevil" and "Ghost Rider" didn't fare well at all. "Daredevil" is now about to rebooted, and "Ghost Rider" managed a sequel somehow, but failed again. DC Comics may have put out less films post-2000 (things were different before that with Marvel being barely existed and were poorly done in regards to movies), but they have less failures.
Another way that television is better than movies, is the wait time. Longest wait time in television is the "summer break". a few months of reruns before returning for weekly shows. Movies? Looking at a minimum 2 year wait time in between films. Sure there are exceptions, but not many. And although things are getting better, even today sequels and follow-ups tend to pale in comparison to its predecessor. That is a long time to wait for disappointment. Same thing could be said about TV shows, but again, able to improve on things most times.
Going with the wait time, is also the star power. Of course you will see bigger names in a movie. They get paid more in most cases. However, with films there is only a small amount of time to get both the story across and get characters into it. With comic book movies especially, there are countless characters everyone wants to see make an appearance, and even if there is say five characters that fit, it is another x-amount of time between films and even less space for new characters to appear in the next one. With television, you have an entire season with numerous shows to not only tell one larger story or a collection of smaller stories, but also more room for characters to appear. Example would be villains, with 1 or 2 in one film, then 1-2 more in the next, etc To show 5-10 villains would take 5 films and roughly ten years time. Not the case on TV, as even if they focused on a villain or two for an entire season, they can showcase the same amount of them in half the time than with movies. And not even guaranteed to get the star to reappear (ie. Bruce Banner is two different people in the "Avengers" movieverse...damn you yet thank you, Edward Norton).
Now I am sure someone is thinking about the "Phases" for building up "Avengers". But remember to stop and think about what that style is slightly imitating. Television. In a basic sense of course with each film being an episode leading up to a massive season finale. That being said, now we have "Arrow" and "The Flash" about to take things to another level on the small screen. Cross-overs between the two could make for some pure awesomeness.
Lastly, television is generally more affordable than the movies. Almost everyone has a television (almost), but not everyone goes to the movies. Especially in the age we live in where it is all digital and despite laws, easily accessible...for free.
Was hard writing this really, as I love both film and television. Perhaps it is just the DC Comics fan within that had to make a point about who is really "winning" this supposed battle between DC Comics and Marvel (I do like Marvel, just a preference for the originals right now). And even though I enjoyed "Green Lantern" it was really DC's only flop, and others being more top quality, are they really "losing"? Definitely owning the small screen with "Arrow" and new shows "The Flash", "Gotham", and "Constantine". If we add quality video games to the mix, DC Comics is beating Marvel two out of three formats. So, you can have your movies, Marvel....and keep up the good work as they are great to watch.

ROCK IS BLACK ADAM, BUT WHO IS SHAZAM?

It was a casting that was actually thought of years ago, when Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was still a full-time wrestler and a rookie in the movie business. But, we now have The Rock playing the part of Black Adam in the future Shazam (Captain Marvel for those still unwilling to call him by his new name) movie that will be a part of DC Comics movieverse. So, now we are left with the question, who's going to play Shazam?

Before it became official, The Rock did give a clue as to who he was playing by saying "Shazam" (which is also the word used by both Adam and Shazam to summon their powers). With most of us knowing that likely meant he was playing Black Adam, given his personality and acting ability The Rock would've also made a great Shazam as well. At first, I was thinking it would have to be an actor with big muscles and all of that, but then remembered what Zack Snyder has done with Superman (Henry Cavill), Batman (Ben Affleck), and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) and how it can really be any actor who could. They not be able to bulk up to the size of The Rock (who can also tone down), but they can simply bulk up and rely of their acting ability.

The person would have to be able to almost portray a man-child, as Shazam is still a kid named Billy Baston using magic to basically look like Superman (Fun fact: Captain Marvel was out selling Superman at one point in the golden days of comics). They also should have a slight youthfulness to their appearance. Top of my head there is only one name that comes to mind. Someone who I didn't think I would ever want, nor think should belong in a comic book movie. Although he can be quite funny at times in comedies, he tends to be the preference of our wives, girlfriends, and partners. That being Channing Tatum. He almost seems perfect for the role. He can add that needed immaturity to the role, he has that youthful look I referenced. And he is capable to add the required muscle mass as well. Over time I am sure more names could pop into my head, but for now this is who I would go with. If anything, he could add those "Twilight Numbers" (young women audiences) to the box office. Plus, remember what the late Heath Ledger did with the role of The Joker in The Dark Knight. Who's to say Tatum couldn't make this epic? Stay Nerdy!

WHO IS THE ROCK PLAYING IN DC'S MOVIEVERSE?

With newcomer Ray Fisher getting the nod to play Victor Stone aka Cyborg in the upcoming Man Of Steel follow-up, we can not only add another member to the Justice League, but also take away one more possibility as to whom Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson will be portraying. Of course it is just an assumption that the character who The Rock will play falls into the Man Of Steel movieverse. He's built himself into a big time Hollywood name, so it would add to the hype that would surround an all out Justice League movie.

Only thing that we know for sure is that The Rock is signed on to play a character from DC Comics catalog, it will be a character that hasn't been on the big screen before, and that he will be bad ass! Rumors have always involved the WWE great, but began to pick up more steam once the news broke. Here's a list of possible choices for The People's Champion...

Black Adam

This is the role that fans have been wanting and creating rumors over since roughly 2001 or so. Simple fan art has even shown that The Great One would suit the role almost perfectly on a visual level. In order for for this character to appear within either the Man Of Steel/Justice League movieverse, or a movieverse all its own, Shazam (formerly Captain Marvel) would need to appear. Well, one would assume that he would, but DC Comics hasn't been big on having Superman and Shazam at the same time given their likeness. It could be an original story though that could have Black Adam as an enemy of Superman. It could work.

Steel

Okay this one has been done before. Remember how that went though and who better to give the character Steel his redemption? To make it even more unlikely is the slight similarity to the newly cast character Cyborg. Again, just looking for redemption after Shaq broke the original like it was a backboard.

Martian Manhunter

Not sure if The Rock meant that the character has never appeared in a movie or ever in live action form. Although this character has appeared in the former television series Smallville, technically J'onn J'onnz only appeared in his alien form for a matter of seconds. Not a knock on the previous attempt, there is so much more to Martian Manhunter, and could be a key part of the Justice League/Man Of Steel movieverse.

Lobo

It seemed to be more rumored of the possibilities for The Rock to play when he announced to us he signed on with DC Comics. Lobo fits the never been done before prerequisite, as well as the one for being bad ass. Only problem with this choice, would be the amount of hate that would come from the people who want Danny Trejo to play this role. Nobody can blame them, the Machete star is a perfect casting but, he isn't a young man anymore, and The Rock is pretty bad ass himself and would be a good second choice

Green Lantern John Stewart

This choice would almost serve two roles, first being the debut of one Sector 2814's Green Lanterns. Secondly, it is an opportunity to bring redemption to the Green Lantern Corps after the critically and box office under achiever, Green Lantern (2011). Does John Stewart reach bad ass status though? Former military so he is the more of follow orders type of guy out of the other Lanterns to come out of Earth, but that experience also puts Rock in his comfort zone and make his own as well as be loaded with action.


Hard to truly pinpoint who The Rock will play, saying that it will be a character that has never been done before, only eliminates a short list of possibilities, and still leaves an endless number of roles. DC Comics is just now breaking out from their Batman and Superman comfort zones, and looking to really push their characters onto the silver screen. Visually speaking he was almost perfect for the role of Cyborg, but as is their choice Ray Fisher. Like with everything in this new DC Comics movieverse, it is a wait and see type of thing. At least now, the wait isn't as bad when we now know this is all finally happening. Justice League is going to be coming to life. Take that Marvel! This is also possibly good for wrestling fans as well, with the target audience being generally the same, no better platform for The Rock to promote the movie he is in than the WWE.
